Samantha

Samantha is a pretty chill one year old! She was very content to sit for me and snack on her Cheerios. When it came time for her cake smash, she wasn't too sure about that cake. It is always so funny to me how each baby reacts to a cake put in front of them. Some dig in and eat like crazy, some cry, and some just play with it. Sam decided to play with it and was on a mission to wipe off every green polka dot. I had lots of giggles just watching her with her cake. Hope you enjoy the preview mom!

The "Out of the Box" Photo Booth

The "Out of the Box" photo booth is a great add on to any wedding or event coverage. Actual photo booths are fun but EXPENSIVE. This affordable version allows you to involve more guests in your photo instead of cramming 3-4 into a little itty bitty booth. I did this for my daughter's Alice in Wonderland Birthday Party and it was a big hit! Brandon and Ivy chose to have the photo booth available for their guests to enjoy during the reception. Their guests had a blast and also provides you with some pretty hysterical pictures to give to your guests. We provide all the props, lighting, and backdrop. You provide the event and the guests. I am finally catching up on blogging!! I have been so excited to share Ivy and Brandon's wedding! The happy couple and their entire family were so kind and gracious. This is my first time shooting at the Junior League and it is just stunning! Brandon and Ivy chose to have me bring along the "Out of the Box" photo booth. I have to save those for another post (hopefully tomorrow). They are hysterical! This post is already pretty picture heavy already. I really couldn't control myself! Wow!!! I think it's been a really GREAT YEAR!! Slowly I have transformed this little hobby of mine into something more. I appreciate all of you and thank you for allowing me to take your pictures!!

The new year is a great time to make plans and reorganize. So I have made a few for myself in regards to my photography.

An upgrade to this blog is taking place. Blogger has been good to me (because it is free) and I have become pretty savy when it comes to writing html code/designing and optimizing my own look. However, I do not feel it showcases my photos the way they deserve to be shared. So hopefully within the next two months, I will launch the new bloggy. I am really excited about this!!!

I'd like to work on getting featured more. I was lucky enough to have some of my work appear in Kern County Family Magazine as well as a Photography blog Confessions of a Prop Junkie. I'd like to venture out and try to be featured on other blogs/magazines.

If my hubby is fortunate enough to find a job this year, our plan is to convert the third car garage into a more suitable studio rather than shooting in my living room. Although, I think I may keep newborns inside during the colder months. Nothing fancy planned, just a better working space. Our biggest challenge will be storage for our junk already out there.

I want to thank everyone that allowed me to take their pictures this past year! Being able to take pictures of your families has been a huge blessing to ours. Some of you know that my husband has been unemployed off and on for over a year now. Thank you, thank you, thank you for picking me from the bottom of my heart! "Mom's with Camera" Class

I've been asked by a lot of people when I will be offering a beginner's class (usually around Christmas when DSLR's have been given as gifts). I am excited to announce that I will finally be offering a class!!!! This class is not just for mom's. Dad's and teens are welcome also.

This class will definitely get you up and running with your DSLR and off of that Auto setting. We'll talk about bells and whistles on your camera, teach shooting in priority modes, focus dots/toggling, basic composition, and finding good light (and much much more if time permits). If participants are interested in furthering their knowledge, future classes will be offered and we can schedule additional classes to pick up where we left off.

Class size will be limited for an intimate setting and allowing me to focus on each participant needs/questions.

I've been very lucky dealing when shooting twins these days (2 for 2 this year). These adorable munchkins and their equally adorable parents were such fun to hang out with! Sometimes, I really don't feel like I am working, but being paid to have fun! I keep telling my hubs that sometimes it feels so odd/wrong to be paid for taking pictures. I must add, the Keller kids win for having the most amazing brown eyes! I loved everything about this session!

The light was so GORGEOUS for Alex's session!!!!! I wish the light could be this good for all my sessions! Isn't Alex just beautiful!!!!???? Like I need to add question marks to that last sentence. I had a blast running all over downtown with Alex and her mom. A total bonus was mom doubled as an assistant (thanks mom!). I stayed up way past my bedtime to work on these images. Honestly, I couldn't help myself! These images are just gorgeous! I may come back and add a few more as I finish editing this session. You might want to check back. I've known Tim since he was a little boy and it's hard to believe he's now a senior! His family moved a few years ago and I am so happy they thought to have me shoot Tim's senior pictures while in town for a visit! I miss these guys!! Not only is he all grown up now, he's a whole heck of a lot taller than me! So much so, I probably should have brought a chair. What to Wear - November

Holiday Sessions are in full swing. Here are a few more ideas for your upcoming sessions. A good rule of thumb to follow is to keep color by your face and go with lighter colors on the lower extremities. Not to say light or white colors shouldn't be near the face, it can work. I would avoid doing that on every subject though. I like having a nice contrast for the face. I consider denim jeans a neutral color that goes with everything. I also like to go into dressing the fam by starting with a color palette of three to four colors. Most importantly, do not wait until the day before to finalize your outfits. More than likely, you may have to order pieces online and you need to allow enough time for that. I have had people cancel or reschedule for this very reason. Phillips Family

What an adventure we had with the Phillips Family!!! I was so excited when they said they wanted a beach session! We had an absolute blast and they had me laughing the entire time!!! By the way guys, I am totally available for adoption! We even had a star sighting! My friend had noticed this guy on the beach playing his guitar. I am not one to bother celebs (except that time I met Arnold, Sly, and Swayze). So we just walked past him. We made the long hike back to our cars and I shared our sighting with Cindy and Ally. My bad! I totally cheated them from the opportunity to meet someone from their FAVORITE movie. I really should have snapped a pic. We wrapped up the evening having dinner at a local joint with extremely tricked out Harley's parked out in front. I am not a big fish and chips fan but I had some of the yummiest fish and chips I've ever had! Sessions like this make me love my second job!

I have been so bad about blogging lately! I am extremely unhappy with how facebook showcases photos, I have decided to share only a few there every now and then. Possible Openings for November & What to Wear Guides

There is a possibility that I may add a few more holiday sessions. As of now, I am completely booked up for the rest of 2011. With how crazy the weather has been here in Bakersfield, I have for now chosen to leave three weekends in November open in case I have to cancel sessions due to bad weather. So, if you are just DYING to have a session with me, I have created a waiting list. If I do not need those weekends to reschedule sessions, I will open them up. I love me some FAT babies!!!! Babies with cellulite...even better!!!! Love this little butterball!!! He is just so happy and chill, even when we took off all of his clothes and put him on concrete. Derek and Melissa-Bakersfield Wedding Photography, Seven Oaks Country Club

I almost didn't get to shoot this wedding! It was for a very good reason. My son was rushed up to Madera Children's Hospital as he had began to have seizures Thursday afternoon. We didn't expect a quick diagnosis, but luckily we had one by late Friday. He has childhood epilepsy, but is expected to grow out of it in a few years. We were discharged in the nick of time and I rolled into town with just enough time to get dressed. Next to my son's health, whether or not I made this wedding weighed heavily on my mind.

Derek, Melissa, and their families were so understanding, kind and gracious. I am truly flattered that they chose me to capture their big day! Every detail was perfect and the venue was gorgeous! Everything worked out as it should have and lots of prayers were answered for us all!

What to Wear

I think the question I get asked the most is "What should we wear Jen?" Finding the perfect outfit for everyone in the family is no easy task! I have scheduled my own family's session for the end of September with a fellow photographer. At the end of this post is an example of what I have planned out so far for my kids (haven't purchased yet, but slowly will). My hubby and I already have clothes in this color palette so I am not worrying too much about our clothing...yet. I thought I'd share with you some tips for planning out your family's outfits for a session.

* Dress like you and dress comfortably.

* Choose a color palette of 3-5 colors. Not everyone needs to wear the same color, just a color from the palette. My hubby and daughter are fair so I want a darker color for them to contrast with their hair and skin. A light color could wash them out so I am careful in my consideration for their clothing. My boys and I are darker so I wanted what we will wear to have some light colors to it again to provide a contrast. Don't be afraid of color. I personally love bold colors for photos.

* A pop of pattern is good. Too much pattern or a bold pattern draws the eye right to it. So be careful in pattern selection.

* Layering is good especially when introducing a pattern. As in the example at the end of the post I put together for my kids, there is a solid shirt under each of the patterned button ups. If my daughter's dress was patterned, I could layer a solid cardigan over it.

* Accessories are super important in my opinion. Selecting the right jewelery, belt, shoes, or hair diddies add the perfect touch!

* I am not a big fan of matchy-matchy unless you are a twin under the age of 5. I am not a fan of subjects all in a white shirt and jeans either. White is a tough color to shoot, especially if you are fair. Brides get a free pass.

* Don't wait until the last minute to find the perfect outfit. It takes weeks to plan and be happy with it. I have had clients cancel because they waited too long to find coordinating clothes. Most often, Bakersfield is not the place to shop as our shopping is limited. Sometimes you can find what you need, but usually just not when you need it. It may require shopping online or out of town. You want to love what you are wearing so that you love the pictures I take. Nothing makes you look and feel better than a fabulous outfit and the confidence you get from how you look will be obvious in your photo.

Family sessions now available through November

Wow! I am amazed with all of the inquiries for family sessions I have been getting over the last few weeks. I am so flattered you all like my work (blush) and that you are so eager to book! I have told those of you asking that I would be opening my schedule up in August. After much discussion with the hubs and looking at all I need to do next month with the start of the school year (for those of you that don't know, I teach kindergarten), it would be wise for me to open my schedule now instead of booking next month amidst all the craziness. August will be available for a few studio kids/babies sessions only.

Family sessions will begin mid September and my last session will be November 12th. Available dates will be listed at the end of this post. I am requiring session fees be paid at time of booking. These are Bakersfield sessions only. The session fee will be $200.00 for immediate family only and will include 10-15 high res images on CD (with a print release). Also included will be a Christmas card design (the jpg image, not the cards). Print pricing is on my site. I have to charge the fee up front as I had several families last year cancel at the last minute when I had to turn families away. In all fairness to me (as this is part of my income) and to families who truly want the session, it will be due two days after booking and the spot will be up for grabs if it is not paid. If you have to cancel, we will reschedule, but I cannot promise to schedule it before Christmas. Please message me or contact me via my site to inquire about booking.

I will be shooting at the beach in October for two weekends, but at a higher rate. I have to cover my travel fees and accommodations. At this moment, both weekends are booked. These sessions were created at the request of a few clients earlier in the year. I am considering adding two more sessions, but they would be early morning. I am not quite sure I will add them to my schedule. If you are interested let me know and I will put you on a standby list in order of inquiry.

I am so behind on posting to the blog! I don't know if I can get all of what I've been working posted, but I do have to share some of my faves from a few of my past sessions!

Rachel is such a doll! She never fell into a deep sleep, but we got her out enough to get these great shots! Newborn sessions do take longer than a typical session. We spend more time shushing more than taking pics. I enjoy spending time holding babies and getting chatting with parents. Bonus-I totally get my baby fix.

So it is that time of the year when I pack up my classroom for the summer and attend the many, many events for my own children. I fondly think of it as Crazy May!!! It's nuts for me every year! The best words I could use to describe this wedding is Hollywood glam meets springtime garden. I am absolutely in love with the images from Jason and Meagan's wedding! They were so kind and gracious which made this experience all the more a pleasure! When they told me that the locations I would be shooting for their big day would be The Padre Hotel and Bakersfield Museum of Art, I am pretty sure I squealed with delight!!!!!! The most chill newborn ever!!!! The most chill newborn that was awake ever!!!! Landon was so curious about all the fuss going on around him. We finally tired him out around the three hour mark (okay maybe closer to four). He only cried when we finished and he had to be moved to get ready to go home. Who could blame him???? I don't like being bothered with when I am sleeping. Seriously yummy little guy!! I totally got my baby fix for the week!!!!!! For those of you considering newborn photography (with any photographer) expect for your session to last about one-three hours (depending on how sleepy they are). Meet my new bestie Taylor!!! We decided while we were playing in the field that we were each others new best friend. She kept calling me John instead of Jen(lol). I think 6 months old is one of my favorite ages to shoot!!! They are so happy and just sitting up. A big plus is that they haven't quite got that traveling thing down so the are easy to keep in one spot. Kylie was so much fun and oh soooo cute!!!! I often get asked "What should we wear for our session??". Rather than be matchy matchy twins or opt for the jeans and a white shirt, choose a color palette and work from there. Don't be afraid of throwing in a subtle pattern or layering your clothing. I also love the little touches of accessories that add to an outfit. Below is an example using a color palette and building a session wardrobe from that (clothing from Old Navy and Piperlime). Hope this helps!!

Grady

Finally! A boy baby!!! I mostly have shot newborn girls so when my good friend from work announced she was having a boy, well I was tickled "blue"!!! Grady had a tough time staying asleep for us so we chilled for a couple of hours. It was totally worth it. Of Course I never mind a long newborn session as I get my baby fix and I get to visit friends (new and old). If you are expecting a newborn and are planning to have a photographer take your baby's pictures, expect the session to be 1-3 hours. Mom and I were happy to catch up and Grady's big sis was happy to tag along since she got to play with the big kids and eat!

Mom and I had talking about a sock monkey hat for quite a while. Grady is such a chunk that the hat didn't fit him too well. Still love the photo!!! He is a chunky monkey for sure!

Ella was seriously the best baby!!! In these photos she is three days old. I prefer having these sweet babies come in for photos as early as possible. They are still so sleepy and flexible. Newborn shoots can last up to three hours. We had this session finished in a about an hour. Ella rocked her session! I am in love with these images!!!

I cannot tell you enough how much I *heart* these kids!!! They have always got me laughing my hiney off! Their sessions are always an adventure! I've been lucky enough to take their pics three years in a row and design their super cool Christmas cards. Mom always lets me do WHATEVER and each year we try to top the last. I learned how to use my camera photographing the Wright's. They were one of the families always willing to let me shoot them. They are gorgeous and Krista has the best sense of style. I've known these guys for a long time!! I was Isabel's kindergarten teacher. To see her growing up so quickly is a reminder that I am getting older. It was an absolute pleasure to spend time with them and take some photos. The weekend of this session had some really creepy, bizarre weather. I had to cancel the session the day before because of it and said many prayers that this session was going to happen. Just as we began to shoot, the weather and the sky began to get weird. My daughter was so mad when she overheard me telling my husband where I was going for this session and who I was shooting. Her famous last words...""No Fair!!!". Olivia loves to play with Lauren!!! I don't shoot extended families often. Large family sessions can be tricky just because there is so many people. This session was a total blast and the kiddos were such awesome listeners!!!!! Of course it helps I am willing to sing, dance, or act crazy silly for a smile.

Grandpa was quite the popular guy! Everyone (including Grandma) wanted to sit by him!!

New Backdrops

I have new backdrops!! Yay!! They are arriving slowly but surely. Several were on backorder but this one finally came. Two more anyday now. Wanted to share one with you. In LOVE!!! If you are interested in a studio session for children, I may be able to manage and squeeze a few in before Christmas. Outdoor family sessions are not available until January of 2011.

Melissa Koehler Workshop

I had the opportunity to attend Melissa Koehler's Workshop in San Diego. Wow!! What an experience!! I learned so many new things!! Melissa is an amazing mentor!! I got to stay at a beautiful Bed and Breakfast in La Jolla. The ocean was right outside my window. I fell asleep each night to waves. HEAVEN!!!!!!

I was lucky to attend with several other amazing photographers. Not only did I come away with new knowledge, but I made several new friends (and you can never have to many of those)!

The workshop included working a session from shooting to processing. We were fortunate enough to have the Jessica's family model for us!! Jessica makes some seriously cute tutu's! Check them out!!!

They were the perfect family!! Thank you Jessica for allowing what was like having the paparazzi stalk you. I know that you have many GORGEOUS photos of your family!

Blake had me at "hello"! He is the chunkiest, happiest baby on the planet! Seriously yummy (obviously)! Mr. Wolff was a total rockstar in Blake's eyes. It was so cute that he preferred to play with him. So instead of wrangling my own personal kiddos, they were running a muck so that Mr. Wolff could entertain Blake. Good thing Blake's mom and I have been friends for a long time. The fact that we are friends cancels out anything tacky (like my kiddos running around), right? Hehehe!!!
